PARRA : interview & Expo au MoMa De San Francisco

Alors que l'expo de Parra se déroule en ce moment même au SFMOMA, je vous renvoie à son interview réalisée précédemment pour Wad mag. Check!


Si Parra devait se réincarner, il serait skater pro. Heureusement, le ciel lui est venu en aide et lui a insufflé l'image d'une grosse femme bleue mi oiseau mi figure surréaliste au pieds talonnés. Évoluant dans un univers érotisant et absurde, Parra couche sur coton ses délires imaginatifs afin d'en créer des t-shirts originaux. Sa compagnie Rockwell Clothing existe depuis 2000 et ne connait pas la crise. Normal, tout se décline en bleu-blanc-rouge. Ah, attendez, il est Hollandais.


Sachant que c’est une conversation téléphonique, pouvez-vous nous dire où vous êtes et ce que vous faites ?
Je suis chez moi à Amsterdam et je travaille sur une veste de ma nouvelle collection pour Rockwell Clothing. Ce qui s’avère être ma seule activité depuis quelques semaines.

Qu’est ce qui vous a donné envie de devenir illustrateur ?
Je voulais d’abord être skateur pro. Ensuite, je me suis intéressée au graphisme, j’ai été dans une très mauvaise école mais j’étais moi même très mauvais ! Après quelques stages, je me suis tourné vers l’illustration.

Donc… c’est votre culture du skate qui influence votre boulot ?
Oui totalement, plus maintenant, mais oui. Maintenant j’ai 35 ans et mes influences sont surtout issues des années 80 et du début des années 90.

Comment cette grosse femme oiseau toute bleue avec des talons est-elle devenue votre signature ?
C’est comme ça. Ça a transpercé les cieux et c’est venu à moi. Soudain, tu trouves quelque chose et ça marche. Pour être vraiment honnête quand j’ai commencé à dessiner, j’étais très mauvais.  Puis à force de pratique, tu t’améliores.

Votre travail m’inspire un mix entre Cocteau et la mythologie. Ça vous parle ?
Qui est Cocteau ? Laissez-moi juste chercher parce que je ne le connais pas…

C’est un dramaturge, dessinateur et écrivain français.
Oh, vous savez ce qui est drôle ? La mère d’André m’a donné un livre sur Cocteau parce qu’elle aussi trouvait que mon travail était similaire. Ce n’est qu’il y a deux ans que j’ai vu son travail pour la première fois. Je ne m’intéresse pas vraiment aux autres « arts », parce que selon moi l’être humain est un copieur naturel et que faire ça n’aide pas, j’ai surement passé un après-midi à regarder des trucs sur la mythologie et chopper 2-3 trucs mais j’essaye de garder mes influences aussi vague que possible.

Quel est le boulot dont vous êtes le plus fier ?
C’est ma marque de vêtement Rockwell. Elle existe déjà depuis 10 ans alors que lorsque j’ai commencé, ça ne ressemblait à rien. J’en suis très fier.

Si tu pouvais être quelqu’un d’autre le temps d’une journée, qui serais-tu et pourquoi ?
Peut-être que j’essaierai d’être un skater pro. Parce que c’était mon rêve et que ça n’a pas été possible parce que j’étais lent. Oui je serais un de ces skaters pro de 22 ans qui habite en Californie.

Et maintenant, quels sont vos projets ?
Le projet sur lequel je bosse en ce moment, c’est une œuvre pour le MoMa à San Francisco. C’est très excitant, je dois réaliser un grand mur. Je suis à mi-parcours au niveau du dessin.

Oh cool, et combien de temps vas-tu exposer ?
Je crois que ça va être là pendant 6 mois. Je serais exposé au département design et architecture parce que c’est leur curator qui a aimé mon travail. C’est assez révélateur de mon travail : c’est du graphisme, de l’illustration ou de l’art ?

Un mélange des trois…
Oui, exactement. Mais il n’y pas de galeries qui fonctionnent de cette manière. Donc oui c’est au département de design et d’architecture mais ce sera surtout au MoMa comme toute pièce d’art. C’est la première fois et je suis très excité.

Evolving in an eroticising and absurd universe, Parra lays his imaginative fantasies on cotton, creating original t-shirts. His company Rockwell Clothing has been around since 2000 and hasn’t felt the crisis. Of course: everything hints at red, white and blue. Oh, wait, he’s Dutch.

As it is a phone conversation, where are you and what are you doing ?
I am at my house in Amsterdam and I am working on a jacket of my new collection for Rockwell Clothing. That's basically what I've been doing the last couple weeks.

What tempted you to become an illustrator ?
I wanted to be a professional skateboarder. And the my second though was graphic design. I went to a very bad school to learn it. But I was really bad at this! And after some internships I turned to the illustration. 

So.. is your skate culture influencing your work ?
Yes i definitly has, not anymore, but yes. Because I'm 35, and my infleunces are especillay 80's and pretty much early 90s, too.

How did this fat birdy blue woman with heels become your signature?
It comes to you. It transcends from the skies onto you, and it just chose me. Suddenly you find something and this just work. To be very honnest when I start drawing i was very bad at it. All over the years, if you do it every day, it's better.

What if I say your work is a Cocteau x Mythology mix ? 
Who's Cocteau ? Let me just search really quick because I don't know about him.... 

It's a french dramaturge, drawer, and writer.
Wow, you know what's funny? The mother of André, gave me a book about Cocteau because she though my work looked like his stuff. I've never seen his work before two years ago. I don't really look at other's art, because human beeing is a natural copier, and this cannot help I had maybe an afternoon watching mythology stuff and picked up one or two things, but I try to keep the influences as vague as possible.

What's your work you are most proud of?
It's my clothing compagny Rockwell. It already exists for 10 years and when I started it looked like shitty. I'm very proud of it, I like the all journey. 

If you could be anyone else for just one day, who would it be, and why?
Maybe, I will try to be a proskater. Because that was my dream, and it was not possible because I'm slow. Yes I would like to be a 22 years old pro skater in Californie.

And now, what's next?
The big thing I'm working on now, is a commition of a show in the MoMa in San Francisco, which is really exciting to me because they commissionned me  to do a big wall. I'm in the middle of finishing the drawing, and I'm flying out there in march to put it on the wall.

Oh cool, and how long will it be exposed?
I think it's gonna be up there for 6 month. And the reason why this is in the Moma of SF, at graphic design and architecture department, is because the graphic design carrator really liked my work, but there is always that problem, is it graphic or illustration or art? 

It's a mixture of three, I guess.
Yes, exactly. But there is no such galleries. So, yes it's in the design and architecture department, but it's gonna be at the MoMa as any art place. It's the first time and I'm really excited about it.
